Schools Tuition

As well as my private tuition work here in Norwich I have also been a visiting music teacher to three schools here in the City for the last 17 years or so: Norwich School (set in the Cathedral Close and founded in 1547 by King Edward VI), Notre Dame High School (founded in 1864 by the Sisters of Notre Dame) & Notre Dame Preparatory School (originally founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1865). At present I teach only at the Norwich School (Lower & Senior Schools). I resigned my position at Notre Dame High School in 2008 and then the Notre Dame Prep School in December 2010 to concentrate only on my teaching work at the Norwich School.

Norwich School

I have been instructor of woodwind and the director of the Senior Jazz Band since 2002. My duties, as a visiting music teacher to the Norwich School, are to offer lessons to pupils in the Senior School on Saxophone (Alto, Tenor & Soprano), Flute and Clarinet and also prepare pupils for GCSE & A level Music recitals, School concerts & Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations (in Classical & Jazz styles). I also assist in the preparation of music for School services in both the School Chapel and Cathedral.

norwichcathI consider it a privilege to be a part of this very fine School and excellent music department. The school's origins go back to 1547 when it was incorporated by Royal Charter by King Edward VI (though a school has existed here before that time). The school is 'a friendly & busy community set in the centre of the city yet in the calm of the Cathedral Close'. Music is central to the life of the school, from daily assemblies in the Cathedral to music lessons within the music department. Directed by Richard Allain and assisted by Duncan Barlow, Norwich School strongly encourages musical involvement. The School educates the trebles of the Cathedral Choir. The School Chapel also has its own Choir.

It is on occasions quite overwhelming to be in such a beautiful environment as the Cathedral Close. The Cathedral itself has such historical significance and continues to this day to be a vibrant part of life and Christian worship & witness within the city of Norwich. I know that each one of us at the School is thankful to be in such a place as this.

Notre Dame Preparatory School

I was instructor of woodwind at the school (since 2005). It was good to have been involved at both the Notre Dame High School and also the Notre Dame Preparatory School as both are linked by their origins, Christian foundations and purpose. My duties were to teach pupils (from age 7 to 11) on Alto Saxophone, Flute and Clarinet - from beginner stage to early Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations and beyond. I also assisted pupils to prepare for music assemblies, recitals & school concerts. It was my endeavour to assist pupils to be well prepared for when they move on to higher education so that they could enjoy music at a more advanced level. I resigned and left the school in 2010 as I had commenced a new teaching position at the Lower School (at Norwich School). Notre Dame High School

I was instructor of woodwind and the director of the school Jazz Band (from 2001). My duties, as a visiting music teacher, were to instruct pupils on Saxophone (Alto, Tenor & Soprano), Flute and Clarinet and also prepare pupils for GCSE & A level Music recitals, school concerts & Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations (in Classical & Jazz styles) to a more advanced level. I was also involved in worship services for the school over the years. My central motivation (as a music teacher & professional musician) was to assist pupils to discover and to fully realise their musical potential.

I have been very privileged over the years to have instructed some truly gifted & wonderful pupils, many of whom have gone on to Music School, College or University and are now professional musicians & teachers themselves. I am grateful to have been a part of the life & ethos of the school, which is founded on strong Christian principles. (Please do visit the school's website and go to the pages that offer more background on it's history & ethos). Over the years that I was a part of the teaching team at Notre Dame High School the Music Department thrived under the magnificent leadership of Christian Stirling, the Director of Music (now living and working in Chicago, USA). I resigned and left this school in 2008 to fully concentrate my work at Norwich School.
